Problem: Melville is known for figuratively asking this question in most of his narratives: "What does it mean to be human?" Seen another way, this question could be "What does it mean to be humane?" If Melville is indeed a dark romantic, the answer to this question might not be very encouraging concerning how people treat each other. How does Melville address this question in "Bartleby, the Scrivener" or the selection from Moby-Dick? Do not go for the shorter of the two Melville choices. Refer to the videos of Bartleby. The film follows the story well. One might think about the tone (attitude) of Ishmael, or one might consider the significance of the refrain "I would prefer not to."
