Problem
You are working in a WIL placement in an office setting. Your cubicle is next to Asuka, an international student from Japan. Asuka is very quiet, but seems friendly.
You have been in your placement for two weeks. It is mid-morning and you have a meeting planned to go over a project you are working on. Your two teammates pull their chairs over to your cubicle. Asuka is usually pretty quiet, but is currently talking excitedly with someone on the phone and you can hear parts of the conversation.
You jokingly call over the cubicle wall, saying, "hey, Asuka, keep it down, will you? We are trying to have a meeting over here." Everyone in the cubicle laughs, but you hear Asuka say, "I am very sorry, but I have to go right now" followed by silence.
Immediately after the meeting Asuka comes to your cubicle and apologizes for being so noisy, for not getting off the phone when the meeting started, for embarrassing you, and for not being respectful of everyone else who was in the meeting and preventing them from working efficiently. You express that is's really ok and that you were just joking, but Asuka apologizes three more times that afternoon, and twice the next day.
