Hi Flordeliz and Class, here are some physical signs of malnutrition:
Hair: dull, dry--- may indicate protein-energy deficiency
thin, scant & without curl--may show zinc deficiency
Eyes: pale mucus membranes--may indicate vitamin B12, folate and /or iron deficiency
Gums: red, swollen-- may indicate vitamin C deficiency
Skin: slow wound healing-- may suggest a zinc deficiency
black & blue marks due to bleeding skin--may suggest a vitamin C or vitamin K deficiency
lack of fat under the skin--may suggest protein-calorie deficiency
Nail: fragile nails-- may suggest a protein deficiency spoon shaped nails--may suggest an iron deficiency
Gastrointestinal: problems of diarrhea, anorexia and gas--may suggest a vitamin B12 deficiency.
What do you think would be useful in identifying those at nutritional risk?
