What do you think of the tu quoque fallacy

Problem

What do you think of the Tu Quoque fallacy? It seems enormously common in popular culture. If you look at YouTube, you'll find lots of political videos that say, "So-and-so exposes the hypocrisy of (insert political party here)." So what? What do you think that this is supposed to show, given that it cannot show that the person is wrong?

Here is a somewhat related issue to kick around, if you. Daniel Klein shows that people give the wrong answers to basic economic questions in a manner that pretty accurate tracks their political views. So, people on the left are very likely to believe that most people are doing worse today than in the 1960s. People on the right are very likely to believe that a dollar does not mean more to a poor person than a rich person. They're both demonstrably wrong. Does this tell us anything about the use of Tu Quoque in political discussions?
