Sometimes a well-positioned resource (in this case an intellectual resource protected by a patent) can be the source of great profit for a company (Qualcomm). For another company (Apple), it becomes a "five forces" issue (bargaining power of suppliers).
1) If you were the judge presiding over a trial where Apple was suing Qualcomm, whose side would you take? Note that another company (possibly Huawei Technologies of China) is getting ready to fight Qualcomm.
2) What do you think of Qualcomm's strategy of amassing patents on new technologies and making revenues through licensing? (For example, they own the patent to "airplane mode" on mobile phones). From a policy standpoint, is it pro-innovation or anti-innovation?
