Problem
Faulkner says that the title and meaning of his story relate to sympathy for Emily, "a young girl that just wanted to be loved and to love..." (1033). Does Faulkner portray that sympathy in the story? Also, what do you think of Faulkner's assertion that Emily is "expiating her crime" (1034) - is she atoning or making amends by keeping Homer's corpse and sleeping with it all those years?
