In the US, new mothers are given 12 weeks of unpaid leave (FMLA). Some countries as a matter of policy provide paid maternity leave (e.g. Portugal), paternity leave (e.g. Sweden), some longer periods of unpaid leave (e.g. Japan). What do you think are some of the organizational & societal advantages and disadvantages of the US policy (note companies can give more than what is guaranteed by FMLA, but just are not required to) as compared some of these others?
