Problem
People in sports like mixed martial arts (MMA), boxing, American football, hockey, and other contact sports have disproportionately more concussions and are more at risk for having repeated concussions and thus repeated brain injury causing these tragic outcomes.
Silverberg et al. (2022) discusses a possible protocol to treat patients with pre-existing mental health problems with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Silverberg et al. describes that these pre-existing conditions are untreated and unaddressed, and they interact with the newly traumatized brain from the concussion. The authors state "mental health problems frequently interfere with recovery from mTBI but are under-recognized and under-treated" (para. 35) and they say that early screening for these issues is recommended.
A concussion support group and/or group therapy might be a feasible idea. It would certainly address the isolation of post-concussive mental illness, and it might lessen the stigma among those in the group. The life trajectory issue can be addressed as well.
What do you think about a concussion support group and/or group therapy?
