Kant clearly argues that acting rightly is a matter of following moral-rules out of the motivation of doing the right thing. This causes some critics to charge that his theories promote following the rules over loving others and being merciful to others (e.g., one would rather follow the rule then give your own child a break!). What do you think a contemporary proponent of Kant's ethics might say as a way to combine Kant's ideas about following the rules with genuinely loving others?
