We will soon be discussing learning and memory. I have found an article that is accessible to freshmen and sophomores. The reference is below. (It is also posted on Blackboard):
Karpicke, J. D., Butler, A. C., &Roediger, H. L (2009). Metacognitive strategies in student learning: Do students practice retrieval when they study on their own? Memory 17(4), 471-479.
Your assignment is the following:
1. Read the article and think about what it is suggesting.
2. Write a brief summary of the article. It should be no longer than 1 page.
3. Tell me what methods you use to study - rereading textbooks, highlighting, note taking, rereading or rewriting notes, etc.
4. Tell me whether you use "practice retrieval" when you study. If you do, why? If not, why not?
5. What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of this study technique?
The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
