Problem
In The Struggle for the American Curriculum, 1893-1958, Kliebard recounted a number of attempts at reform and the reactions they elicited. For example, the perceived excesses of Social Reconstructionism led to the formalization of Essentialism just as the perceived inadequacies of Life Adjustment Education led to criticisms from individuals such as Bestor and Rickover, paving the way for the post-Sputnik era's renewed emphases on traditional subjects and academic rigor. Today, the primary purpose of curriculum to many observers seems to be "to serve the test." In other words, a major consideration for any curriculum decision is its potential effects on test scores. As the "struggle" continues, what do you envision as likely responses to current excesses? Why?
