The Women's Movement in the Black Baptist Church serves as an example of a community of people practicing new strategies toward racial uplift and community wellbeing (much like the work we discussed from figures like Septima Clark and Ella Baker). What does Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham mean when she says these women "asserted agency in the construction and representation of themselves as new subjectivities"? With this new self-representation, what did the black Baptist women do to shift understandings of the race and gender in the social sphere?
