Assignment Task:
Recently approved education standards for secondary schools in the state of Florida contain the following statement: "Instruction includes how slaves developed skills, which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit."
It is clear that Frederick Douglass learned "skills" during his enslavement. After reading Frederick Douglass' narrative, how do you feel about the inclusion of that standard in Florida's curriculum? What context does Douglass' narrative provide to that standard? Would you keep the standard, re-write it, or get rid of it?
