Patient is a 59-year-old admitted to the same-day surgery suite. Patient is a type 1 diabetic with diabetic nephropathy and end-stage renal disease now requiring dialysis. A Cimino-type direct arteriovenous anastomosis is performed by incising the skin of the left antecubital fossa. Vessel clamps are placed on the vein and adjacent artery. The vein is dissected free and the downstream portion of the vein is sutured to an opening in the artery using an end-to-side technique. The skin incision is closed in layers.
