What change do you need to make so that behavior is positive

Discussion Post: Examine Yourself First

Background Information

The passage of scripture for the devotion is Matthew 7: 3-5 (new tab) (NIV) which is a small section of what is called the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is teaching the crowds high above the Sea of Galilee. Jesus says these words; "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in hour brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Jesus is talking about human relations and interactions that apply directly to life within organizations. From time to time, our coworkers, boss, subordinates, and others will be frustrating and irritating. Sometimes we are tempted to confront the behavior that is causing the problem. If we apply the words of Jesus, we will be slow to confront others' behavior and only do so after we have carefully examined how our behavior is contributing to the issue at hand.

Task

• In the Bible, read or listen (new tab) to Matthew 7:3-5 (new tab).

• After reading the scripture, reflect on the following:

o Have you confronted the behavior of others in the workplace without first examining how your behavior contributed to the issue at hand? If so, what did you learn from the experience?

o Do you regularly examine your behavior and adjust as needed?

o What changes do you need to make so that your behavior is a positive example to others?

o In regards to Matthew 7:3-5, why do you think Jesus gave this direction for our behavior in relationships?

The response should include a reference list. One-inch margins, Using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, double-space and APA style of writing and citations.
