Becoming a fire fighter in a paid department entails a rigorous process Like in NYC for example. Do volunteers receive less training? Can just anyone be fire police? Do things like education requirements and less funding per department change our emergency response in smaller community? Citations required
Reply post to below thread: When I was young in school they used to do the firemen day where they practiced fire drills and the local fire department came over and talked about what to do in case of a fire they even showed you and let you use a fire extinguisher and I thought that was so cool that they got to that stuff all the time and would have loved to become one however I assumed that not everyone could be one and that you had to be special somehow. however, this is proving to be quite the contrary according to the the NYS gov "one must live in the area (each department is different) and meet the active membership requirements or bylaws of the entity or organization. That is much simpler than I had previously thought was needed, and with these fairly simple requirements one could be a volunteer firefighter. For a paid fire firefighter this is far from the end however there are not crazy amounts of school required "Firefighters only need a high school diploma or GED certificate". (ko, nalea. (2022, December 20) However there is some small amount of evidence that this varies from state to state where some require a degree in fire science. Where I was proven correct in my thinking that this is quite the process is when you look at how to become a firefighter in New York City the requirements become more strict ever it is a paid position and are compensated for your time. This list includes but is not limited to "passing a physical and written test, a valid NYS driver's license, living in one of the 5 burrous demonstrating proof of good character, and passing a background check". There is also a need to pass CPR training and AED training but I already figured that would be part of it however I am quite pleased to see that at least in New York you do need some education if you wish to be paid for firefighter and also please to see that if you wish to serve your community and help your small town out in times of need that is also a possibility with just your time and a high school diploma, and if life weren't so busy I could still be a firefighter just an unpaid one.
