Introduction
Synopsis: This case involves the decision-making process to replace an inadequate EHR system in a primary care network owned by a hospital. Students are presented with a system acquisition plan and asked to critique it. (Pages 482 through 487, Wager, Lee, and Glaser text)
This case study will highlight the importance of having a well-developed information system and technology acquisition plan.
Since these types of acquisitions require a major capital investment, they need to undergo a thoughtful and rigorous process of product and vendor review, exploring acquisition options, financial analyses, support service considerations, and how to effectively implement these technologies or information systems once acquired (project management).
This problem will require students to these and other factors into consideration as they critique Watson's plan to replace what they perceive to be an inadequate EHR system.
