Rich, Mark, and the church leaders faced several challenges as they began to respond to this terrible day. Everything included in the story described above took place in one week. On their calendars were other things they had planned to do, but those activities were suddenly obsolete. Through God's grace, Pastor Fred's family was spared the horror and grief of witnessing their husband and father attacked and mortally wounded. This was not the only blessing in an otherwise horrendous crisis. Although the event was tragic, no other church staff or lay leader was fatally injured. Additionally, neither Mark nor Rich were in the sanctuary to witness the attack. Their absence gave them a spiritual and psychological advantage, so they could provide the leadership required in this crisis. Rich was able to protect his own family from this chaos by calling his wife and asking her to stay home with their children.
