Case Study:

Mary is 18 years old and lives with her boyfriend Mark. Mark is 27 and he is employed at a local steelworks. Mary has been unhappy with mark for some time now, as he is abusive. She can't bring herself to leave him as she has one child with him, named Jose, who is 11 months old.

Mary has recently discovered that she is 10 weeks pregnant. Mary has not told Mark about her pregnancy, as she is seriously considering an abortion and knows that he would be opposed to this, which may lead to more violence. Her concern is that, during her last pregnancy, Mark was violent towards her and was intolerant when she was sick and unable to complete her usual household tasks. She would like to have another child, but she does not want to bring the child up in a broken household. She is nervous to visit her GP, Dr Jones, as a recent altercation at home left her bruised.

Dr Jones has known Mary for many years and is well aware of the similar abusive home situation that she grew up in. Her parents and siblings no longer keep in contact with her and Mary appears to have very few friends. Mary explained that Mark becomes very jealous of any social contact she has outside their immediate family, hence she can't confide in anyone about the pregnancy. Dr Jones then suggested that she visit the women's support centre where you are employed as a support worker.

Dr jones has written a referral note tot your centre and (with Mary's consent) has informed your centre that Mark has 'regularly physically and emotionally abused her' but she believes that she wants to stay with him. she doesn't know how she could manage financially or emotionally without him and she is hopeful that things will change. Mary hopes to tell Mark about the pregnancy within the next 7 days, after she visits you at the women's support centre
