The target population for this study is Somali immigrant families from the Twin Cities and their surrounding areas. In this research, I aim to explore the perspectives on mental illness within the U.S. Somali community to enhance mental health services and foster positive change. I aim to identify the barriers to accessing mental health services and determine how to overcome them. I have been conducting independent research using the Internet and the school library. So far, I have found several articles discussing common mental health conditions, but none specifically focused on Somali Americans. However, I discovered an article from the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants, which explains that refugees, as forcibly displaced populations, are at high risk for common mental health conditions and psychosocial problems due to exposure to trauma and violence. Although this article is not specific to Somalis, it is relevant because they are refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their homeland. This information suggests that refugees are at a heightened risk for mental health conditions. Despite suffering from mental health issues, these families are often reluctant to seek help.
This experimental article explains that Somali refugees in Minnesota have high mental health conditions and it was rated PTSD as 50%, yet they are not utilizing mental healthcare services. After studying and interviewing the participants, they found that the barriers they were expecting and finding were very different. They found that many Somali refugees do not have legal documents yet, and they are afraid that if they go to the medical institution, they might get caught and deported. "Common barriers to research participation that we expect our mistrust, financial constraints, fear of unintended outcomes, stigma about participating in research, and fear of deportation or concern of immigration status."
