Read Michelle Alexander, "The New Jim Crow," from The New Jim Crow. Answer the following questions thoroughly BASED on the reading.
• What are the limits Alexander identifies? The limits are Absence of racial hostility, White victims of racial caste, and Black support for "get tough" policies, but say a few words about each. (Review pages 195-208)
• Alexander periodizes US history as the shift from "a racial caste system based entirely on exploitation (slavery), to one based largely on subordination (Jim Crow), to one defined by marginalization (mass incarceration)" (Review 219). Exploitation is easy enough to understand -- the slaves harvested raw materials for production, yielding large profits. Explain the other two -- subordination and marginalization -- specifically accounting for how they relate to slavery, and to each other.
