What are the differences between stereotypes and prejudicial stereotypes?
a) Stereotypes:-
The perceived beliefs one forms of another person or group; however an opinion is formed invariably because of a lack of information which can be positive or negative. Stereotyping does not lead to discrimination; it is based on assumptions or attitudes towards and individual or group. According to Brislin , R. (1981) stereotyping interferes with our perceptions and understanding of the world.
b) Prejudicial stereotypes:-
Forming an opinion about another person or group and being prejudice towards them, i.e. being unfair or bias based on preconceptions about the person or group. This is more negative and can be construed as unreliable opinions. According to Brislin, R. (1981)? stereotyping can lead to prejudice which ultimately leads to discrimination, racism and sometimes victimisation, hence we get prejudicial stereotypes.
