Assignment Task:
The two treatment options for mood disorders I choose to look at are Lithium and Venlafaxine (Effexor). Lithium is used to treat bipolar disorder and major depression. When used for major depression, lithium should be used in conjunction with other medications. Lithium was one of the first mood stabilizers and is still widely prescribed, although there are newer medications on the market. Lithium is a salt that can influence the metabolism of catecholamines and serotonin neurotransmitters. (Chokhawala et al., 2024) Lithium has serious side effects, and a patient should have a regular blood test to ensure there is no lithium toxicity. Clinicians should watch for visible symptoms of toxicity, such as hand tremors and excessive sweating; other possible issues are renal impairment, hepatic impairment, pregnancy complications, and gastrointestinal problems. It is recommended that women who are breastfeeding should not use lithium.
