The 1984 Rajneeshee Bioterror Attack
In the fall of 1984, the single largest bioterrorist attack in the United States occurred in Oregon. It was carried out by members of cult who had hoped to influence the turnout of local election. They sprinkled Samonella Typhimurium on salad bars at 10 local restaurants. As a result, over 750 people got sick, with 45 being hospitalized. The victims suffered from symptoms including fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Most had abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Those responsible for the attacks spread a liquid containing the pathogen over the food on the salad bars. They also poured the liquid into the salad dressing.
