As society changes the importance/emphasis it puts on certain crimes changes. Also, certain acts become crimes even when, in the past, they were legal. For example, Mohamed (2008) states that "Rape presents another example of the social production of crime...Only in the latter part of the twentieth century did U.S. lawmakers pass laws against marital rape--that is, a rape committed by a husband upon his lawful wife".
What are some other examples of how societal norms and standards have changed how people view what is criminal and what is not? Also, why does this occur? What changes in society that makes people look at acts differently?
