Final Paper assignment-
Choose an archaeological site from the historic period in the U.S. (Contact period - 19th century or early 20th century). This can be a site that we discussed in class, or any other site that you find interesting.
Choose a topic that can be examined archaeologically. (i.e. The Archaeology of...gender, class, race, eating/drinking, collaborative action, childhood, etc.) This topic can fit with your personal interests, but you must find archaeological evidence that you can use to outline your arguments.
Paper Topic Assignment:
You must get your topic and at least 2 sources approved by Monday November 10, 2014. You can either email or meet with me before this date, or turn in a hard copy of your proposed topic and sources on this date. Counts towards total paper grade.
Use the following questions to frame your discussion:
Describe the site or topic of interest.
What archaeological research has been done already? (Who, what, when)
What were the primary research questions / research concerns?
What are some of the problematic issues with the data?
What unique information does archaeology contribute to the history of the site/topic?
What conclusions are drawn from the research?
How does the research display the functioning of culture in American society?
What aspects of identity, individual agency, and choice are exemplified? (i.e. the consumption choices of individuals)
What aspects of structure, power, and social resistance are exemplified? (i.e. the restrictions placed by society on individual choice, or the way people negotiate those restrictions)
How might this research relate to current events or politics?
