Educators communicate with a wide variety of individuals every day, such as school or district personnel, families, and members of the community. The method of communication will also vary. It may be written, verbal, or non-verbal. It may be a phone call, an email, a presentation, or even a lesson. Whatever the method of communication, it is essential that you keep it professional and ethical. Respond to the following questions:
a) What are some commonly used speech patterns, words, or phrases that reduce the effectiveness of verbal communication? How might these ineffective speech patterns, words, or phrases overshadow the intended message?
b) What are some examples of non-verbal behaviors that may communicate the wrong message?
c) What are some communication methods and strategies that may help you communicate professionally and effectively with parents, administrators, and colleagues? Consider instances such as parent/teacher conferences, faculty meetings, and grade-level meetings.
