Problem
Simon is referred for a psychological assessment due to concerns regarding academic progress. Simon is a 12-year-old student. While he was born in Canada, his extended family primarily speaks Vietnamese. His parents are separated, and he lives with his mother and older siblings in the same household as his maternal grandparents. Simon's mother is very busy as she has two jobs trying to support the family. Teachers at the school think Simon is struggling with his academic functioning, is disorganized and sometimes forgets to complete his homework. He also struggles to make friends and is bullied.
When speaking with Simon, he reported that he feels quite isolated. He spends most of his time at home playing video games or watching tv. He finds it hard to concentrate at school and finds reading challenging. Simon does not like attending school and reported that his peers make fun of him. He also wants to know more about his father, who lives back in Vietnam.
