What are chief arguments for a more active leadership role

Problem:

Several readings this week focus on the role of the United States in the world. Begin by reading the CRS report on the U.S. Role in the World, including Appendix B. Then read "The Dangerous Illusion of Restraining U.S. Power" and ""Humility in American Grand Strategy," Texas National Security Review" for contrasting views on the role that America should play.

What are the chief arguments for a more active leadership role by the United States in world affairs? Why do others argue for a more restrained policy? Which perspective do you find most convincing? Why? Be sure to include specifics from the readings. What do you think is the proper role for the United States in world politics? Do you think the United States has an 'exceptional' role to play? Why or why not?
