Interview/Focus Group Questions
NOTE:nswers must be differences and each one must has an ideas and examples for their school day semi-structured interview as a qualitative easure of teachers' perceptions of e-mail use. The interview includes seven main questions, which were designed to address research question three, "What are the benefits and barriers to using e-mail to communicate with parents?". The following questions will be posed to the teachers:
1. Have you had training using email as a method of professional communication?
a. If so, what did the training consist of?
2. How often do you use email to communicate with students' parents?
a. (If the respondent answered "rarely" or "never") What stops you from using this form of communication?
b. (If the respondent answered "frequently") Why do you choose to use this mode of communication?
3. Which topics do you often address when communicating via email with parents?
a. Why do you believe that these topics are better addressed via e-mail?
b. How does e-mail benefit the communication process for these particular topics?
4. Which topics to you prefer to address using another method of communication with parents (i.e.,in person, phone, letter)?
5. What positive outcomes/successes have you experienced when using e-mail to communicate with parents?
6. What negative outcomes/failures have you experienced when using e-mail to communicate with parents?
7. Do your school administrators allow the use of e-mail in the classroom?
a. If so, describe the protocol.
b. If not, explain the administrators' rationale for not allowing e-mail (if the rationale has been explicitly stated).
The interview was open (semi-structured), which involved encouraging teachers to explain themselves in as much detail as possible.
