In 2001, Human Rights Watch released a report entitled "Hidden in the Home: Abuse of Domestic Workers with Special Visas in the United States." Special visas allow foreigners to live in the United States and work for diplomats and international organizations (e.g., OAS).
Almost all of them are women, and the abuses documented include median workdays of 14 hours, median wages of $2.14/hour (including room and board), and claims that workers have been slapped, yelled at, and sexually assaulted by their employers. What action, if any, has been taken by the United States to ameliorate this problem? What action should be taken?
