WELDING PROCEDURE AND PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION
A total quality assurance scheme, embracing all aspects of manufacture would have necessarily made all attempts to ensure qualification of all the resources with respect to a specified work environment. Right from raw material delivery conditions, to the commissioning of product, all the facilities and systems including man power are subjected to listing and approvals are obtained by conducting qualifying tests, whenever necessary.
General Requirements as Specified in Contractual Documents
Depending on the type of construction, the broad welding procedure specifications are usually drawn. A list of general parameters observed for such qualifications are listed below:
- Scope of work and code by which the work is covered, etc.
- Welding processes employed.
- Base metals specifications and applicable type, classification and composition of filler rods and weldment.
- Type of current and current range.
- Welder qualification requirements
- Joint designs and tolerances.
- Joint preparation and cleaning of surfaces for welding.
- Tack Welding.
- Joint welding details
- Position of welding involved at factory and at site.
- Preheat, interpass and post heat temperatures.
- Peening.
- Heat input electrode run length.
- Post weld heat treatment.
- Repair of welds.
- Inspection quantum and stages acceptance levels.
