Wealth of information for buying and selling properties

Case scenario:

The Australian real estate industry relies on a wealth of information for buying and selling properties. Real estate agents and brokers often form cooperative organizations, known as Real Estate Community Associations, to consolidate and share information about the profession, market trends, local properties, historical sales records, and current listings.

Real Estate Community Associations provide a service called the Property Listing System (PLS) that offers local agents information to help sell properties to clients. Agents list properties for sale by contracting with owners and work for real estate offices that send listing details to the PLS. This allows any agent in the community to access listing information.

Key listing information, often available online, includes property address, year built, size, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, owner name and contact, asking price, and status. Details about the listing agent, such as their name, office and mobile phones, and email address, are also important. Agents work through real estate offices, making office name, manager name, phone, and address essential. Agents may contact the PLS for property matches to client requirements, receiving information about the property, listing agent, and real estate office.

Agents might call the listing agent to ask additional questions or contact the property owner to arrange a viewing. The PLS produces a weekly listing book containing information on all listings, sent to some agents who prefer physical books, despite potentially outdated information. Agents and owners may decide to change listing information, like adjusting the price, correcting property details, or marking the property as sold. Real estate offices submit these change requests to the PLS upon agent request.
