Randy Smith is a 72- year-old retired sheet metal worker.  His wife died two years ago.  He is adjusting well to life on his own and has frequent visits from his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Despite this he sometimes feels lonely because he misses his wife. In the past he would go to the local legion to dance with his wife and friends. He does still like to go to the legion, but he does not dance as much anymore. He adores dancing and although he has many female admirers with whom to dance, he has found over the past few months he is having increasing trouble with his balance and has been hesitant to go out dancing.  He has also noticed that his cataracts are worsening, and he has suffered many skin tears on the back of his hands recently.

Mr. Smith has worked on contracts in his local projects several times since his retirement at age 65. Last week he received a rejection letter for a project manager position he applied for last month.  He is disappointed because he needs the extra money to buy new hearing aids and to support his favorite hobby (traveling). Randy mentioned to his son that the rejection letter felt like ageism to him.

You are a support worker who provides home support to Mr. Smith 3 days per week.  Your main duties are meal preparation and light housekeeping.  Mr. Smith mentions to you that he is having balance issues and trouble seeing, especially in the evening.  You have noticed that he is having difficulty hearing you and seems sad today.

Thoroughly Answer the Following Questions:

1. In class you learned that elderly women outnumber elderly men by 2:1 and so were not surprised that Mr. Smith had several lady suitors who have invited him to local dances. However, you were surprised when Randy told you he turned them down because he was afraid that he might fall due to his trouble with balance.  How can you, the personal support worker, assist your client improve his muscle mass, strength, balance, and confidence through your everyday work with him?

2. While Mr. Smith awaits cataract surgery, he has worsening vision and is prone to trip or stumble in his home during the evenings or on rainy days.  What can you do to improve his safety while he awaits surgery?) Need Assignment Help?
