Crime was very present before the Civil War. Murder, robbery, and mob rioting occurred before the Civil War took place. Large cities such as New York City were hit with the most criminal activity. Guns became more available in the streets, resulting in the rise of crime as well. In the southern states, handguns were present. According to Roth (2011), “Although rifles have predominated, since the antebellum era handguns have become an increasing presence in the South” (p. 134). Also, the antebellum era served as an eye-opener for the U.S. criminal justice system. As far as punishment, capital punishment took place.
Today, murder and robbery still exists. Not too many mob riots are present though. The crime rates during the antebellum helped establish the penal or correctional system. Policing, probation and parole, and indeterminate sentencing were established. Roth (2011) argues, “While their establishment did not solve all the social problems of antebellum America, urban policing began to play an integral role in maintaining order, preventing crime, and regulating public morality” (p. 137). In my region, murder, assault, and robbery exist. Every time I watch the local news, someone has been murdered, assaulted, or robbed.
