Problem: Although Jean-Michel Basquiat died at the age of 27 and never went to art school, he made over 600 paintings and 1500 drawings. His paintings now sell for tens of millions. Based on what we discussed in class, saw in the videos of the interview with Basquiat, Al Diaz, or read in Tirhakah Love's article, explain how the works and persona of Basquiat have been appropriated and manipulated by the media, art market, and celebrities who collect him? Was Basquiat himself responsible for this in any way? Or was he merely a victim of collectors' greed?
