Vasa are a maternal-effect gene whose product functions in development of the posterior end of the Drosophila embryo. runt is a non-maternal-effect gene whose product functions in the formation of a normal segmentation pattern in Drosophila embryos. Mutations in vasa and runt lead to embryonic lethality.
Several mother/embryo genotypes are listed below. Next to each, indicate whether the embryo would have a wild-type appearance or would display the mutant phenotype (a defective posterior end or defective segmentation pattern). Some of the embryo/mother combinations would not be expected - write not expected next to those, Wild-type or mutant or not expected?
