Hospitals and healthcare providers have a responsibility to provide appropriate care to their patients, and their primary goal should be to ensure the health and well-being of their patients. Discharging patients early before they are fully recovered solely for financial gain would not align with the ethical principles of healthcare. However, it's important to note that the healthcare industry can be complex, and various factors might influence patient discharge and reimbursement decisions.

My cousin, Sam, was admitted to a hospital for respiratory issues. During his stay, he received treatment for his symptoms but felt that the medical staff didn't really spend enough time explaining his condition or the treatment plan. He was discharged after a few days, even though he still felt weak and was concerned about his recovery. Once he was home, his symptoms worsened, and he had to be readmitted to the hospital.

Reimbursement should be tied to the quality of care provided rather than just the volume of services rendered. Value-based reimbursement models, which focus on patient outcomes and quality of care, aim to incentivize healthcare providers to deliver effective, patient-centered care. This model encourages collaboration, patient education, and preventive measures to improve overall patient health and reduce the likelihood of readmissions.
