Description:
Identify a specific applied corrosion problem of your choice. Research your chosen problem and write a 3 - 5 page paper including figures detailing the problem and insightful information relevant to typical control measures.
You will want to research your topic enough to provide an in-depth discussion which may include such issues as: description of corrosion type, corrosion mode, corrosion mechanism, specific industry where problem is most common, examples of specific materials / environments for problem, typical recommendations to alleviate problem, common mistakes made in the field, etc.
Your job is not to just identify "information" to fill space but to draw from multiple sources and write a summary of the problem as you deem "most useful" to someone in the specific area that you have chosen.
Useful information would include common mistakes and how to avoid them, how to correct already existing systems and how to design new systems.
It may also be relevant to discuss possible maintenance programs and / or inspection methods. You will be graded on how well you synthesize information from multiple sources and present the information in a coherent way. You will also be graded on how well you can identify important aspects of the problem / solution and how well your write-up is understandable to your audience.
Audience: Practicing engineer with a basic knowledge of corrosion but with no experience in the area you have chosen. You can assume that your audience understands basic concepts such as electrochemical cells, anodes, cathodes, Nernst equation, mixed potential theory and Pourbaix diagrams as learned in class. However, your audience has no knowledge of the specifics of the area you have chosen.
You will need to explain any details that go beyond a basic knowledge of corrosion. As an example, knowledge that dissimilar metals can create galvanic corrosion is basic and can be assumed to be understood but how to predict galvanic corrosion rates in a specific environment or the mechanisms involved in galvanic corrosion in a specific environment would need to be explained. If appropriate, you will also want to explain any basic test methods or evaluation methods that you recommend.
Use figures as needed if they are an aid to understanding your topic.
Make sure you reference appropriately throughout your paper.
