A recent study was conducted to assess two methods to estimate vehicle speed on interstate highways. A random sample of vehicles on Interstate 75 along Alligator Alley in Florida was obtained. The speed of each vehicle was measured using a loop detector and an electronic toll transponder. The data (in mph) are given in the following table.
Assume that the distribution of pairwise differences is continuous and symmetric.
a. Use the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with a = 0.05 to determine whether there is any evidence that the difference in median speed estimates is different from zero.
b. Based on your conclusion in part (a), which method for estimating speed do you think the state police should use, and why?
