Understanding the issues involved in self-disclosure

Problem: Shyla asks to meet with Alysha Ring, the group facilitator, privately, and explains her concerns. Dr. Ring listens carefully to Shyla's concerns and certainly understands the issues involved in self-disclosure to peers. Dr. Ring is also quite clear that the group she is facilitating is a training group and not a therapy group. Shyla indicates that she understands that and explains that she participated in individual therapy as well as in family therapy with her mother as a part of the reunification process. You are the group facilitator, Dr. Alysha Ring, and you have two choices. What is your decision? a. You let Shyla know that you appreciate how difficult it might be to disclose the information and that you will respect her decision either way, but note that the group is instructional and that her colleagues may be able to learn from her experiences. or b. You emphasize the instructional nature of the group, and urge Shyla to carefully consider what she discloses, noting the importance of a counselor learning what to disclose and when to disclose it.
