Assignment task:
My understanding of the term "defund the police" means reducing funding for police departments and moving those resources to other places like mental health programs, homelessness/low-income housing, education and more. Also some people think cutting police budgets and staff is a bad idea, especially in places where crime is going up. Many people misunderstand "defund the police" as a call to get rid of police altogether. Therefore they worry is that it could increase crime and make communities less safe. In reality, most people who support defunding the police want to rethink how public safety is handled, not completely eliminate police. These thoughts are caused by huge amounts of money being used by the police departments that some people think could be better used elsewhere. My viewpoint is support towards "defund the police", I did some research on the amount of money that the police department has used in prior years that has not benefitted society while also seeing money that has been transferred to other programs and services that could be or already is beneficial to the society. There are a few potential alternatives that could work with the overall goal of public safety. Creating safety solutions and programs or adding preventive measures could help by improving community well being to help lower crime rates. But there will always be the challenge or issue of people not wanting to change and problem of putting all the money into these programs and services and not seeing a beneficial outcome.
