Understanding of the differences between crimes


Assignment task: As an officer, it is important to have a firm understanding of the differences between crimes. When the officer is called to a scene, quick decisions need to be made to determine if a crime has been committed, and statements need to be gathered from witnesses. Understanding the differences between crimes will help you proceed with this process.

Part 1: Create short scenarios that meet all of the elements for the particular crime for each statute listed below.

Part 2: Alter the crimes by adding or subtracting details to make each scenario fit a different degree of the same crime. For example, 3rd-degree assault can become 2nd or 4th degree assault. What are the differences between the degrees?
