"Harry Harlow is famous for his experiments on rhesus monkeys. He is best known for his social isolation research on monkeys during the 1950s and 1960s. Harlow's research was about determining what factors influenced mother-child bonds. He would use wire monkeys to simulate a cold mother with food and cloth-covered monkeys to simulate a warm mother without food. He would use these in his experiments to determine what an infant monkey would prefer. Given the choice between a nonfeeding mother and a cold-feeding mother, the young monkeys spent most of their time with the warm surrogate. By today's standards, most of his experiments are considered cruel and unethical. Some of his experiments involved placing young monkeys in total isolation.
Even though it was controversial, Harlow's research contributed greatly to helping understand the importance of caregiving, affection, and social relationships, especially in early childhood development. "
