Title: Hardenability of steel (Jominy-end quench)
Objective: To understand mechanism of hardenability in steels by Jominy-end quench method.
Equipments: Heat treatment furnaces and Rockwell hardness machine
Specimen: 4340 steels (0.4%C, 0.8%Cr, 1.8%Ni, 0.25%Mo)
Procedures: Samples have been heat treated using the following conditions: Austenitizing at about 900oC for 30 minutes, water spray from one end until the whole samples cooled down to room temperature (about 10 minutes). The sample is then ground/polish to remove the scales/oxide. Hardness test- (Rockwell) is performed on the flat area with a distance of about 5 mm from one indentation to another.
Report with the following outline:
I. Background & Theory
Describe what hardenability of steel is and what is its importance?
II. Procedures
In your own words describe the procedure demonstrated and undertaken in the lab.
III. Results & Discussion
Prepare a table of the results and plot the hardness data into hardness vs. distance from quench end to produce the hardenability curve.
Compare your results and discuss their hardenability, given the following: 4340 steels (0.4%C, 0.8%Cr, 1.8%Ni, 0.25%Mo)
1020 = 0.2%C, 0.3-0.9%Mn
2510 = 0.95%C, 0.5%Mn, 0.95%Cr, 0.1%V, 0.6%W
IV. Conclusion
Summarize the lab activities and state main results and findings.
