Case Study - Mathew Henderson Matty is a 25-year-old man with muscular dystrophy. He is deaf in his left ear and partially in his right ear since birth, he also has epilepsy, which is controlled with medications. He currently lives at a Youngcare Facility in Sydney. He has been living at this facility for the past 2 years. Prior to that, he lived with his parents John and Maureen Henderson. He is their only child. He is very close with his parents who visit him at least 5 days a week. Sarah Cuttle is Matty's primary carer at the facility. She is 25 years old. She usually takes him on social outings to the shops or beach etc. She has known Matty since he came to the facility.

Question 1: List three (3) reasons it is important for nurses to understand the different ways people with disability communicate.

On their recent outing to the shops, Sarah experienced some challenging behaviours from Matty when it was time to leave. He was refusing to follow directions from Sarah and repeatedly kept going back into the shops almost hitting a few people with his electric wheelchair. Sarah had to take control of the chair and exit the shops with Matty. When they arrived back at the facility, they weren't communicating with each other.
