Total quality management versus instant gratification

Assignment:

Total Quality Management - the Japanese embraced it, but the US perferred "Instant Gratification", immediate results regardless if they were short-term. The bottom line was the only thing that management focused on in the late 1950's through the '70's.

TQM hit the US in the 1980's and stayed strong for a few years. Today, there are some companies that embrace TQM in some form or other. Some do not.

From your perspective, is the US focused on Instant Gratification (I want it NOW!!!! as it relates to profits / revenue, etc.) or is the business community focused on long term quality management? No wrong answers, just your opinion based your own experience in the "real world".
