FORMAL REPORT
A formal report is distinguished from other types of reports by its completeness. It contains enough information to allow someone with limited background on the topic to understand the report. The report should contain enough information to allow someone to repeat the work using the same procedure as used in the original project. A formal report is sometimes called a complete report or a final report. A general outline for a complete report covering experimental work is given below.
1. Title Page
2. Abstract (also called a summary)
3. Table of Contents
4. Introduction (generic systems/devices of this class, applications, special characteristics of your system, etc.)
5. Theoretical Background (theory, equations, etc.)
6. Description of Apparatus (the test facility)
7. Experimental Methods
8. Results (text, graphs, uncertainties of main results)
9. Discussion of Results (include comparison with performance characteristics of similar/competing devices)
10. Conclusions and Recommendations
11. Acknowledgements
12. Bibliography (If you have less than three references use footnotes.)
13. Appendix (e.g., sample calculations, calibration curves, raw data, elemental uncertainties, and other supporting information)
