Purpose
To investigate the advantages and disadvantages of following a vegan, lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, flexitarian or macrobiotic diet. Most of us eat a large amount of animal protein. The merits of following a plant based diet have been debated for years and the most current research supports a dietary increase in plant proteins and a decrease in animal proteins. The challenge still remains to insure adequate by carefully selecting the best food combinations. Only a small percentage of our population follow the strict "vegan" diet which eliminated ALL animal products. This activity will allow you to compare the advantages and disadvantages of a vegetarian type diet. Most important, you will uncover the nutritional challenges of following a vegetarian diet if no animal products are consumed.
Directions
- Select what you believe is the best "vegetarian" type diet and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of that diet. This could be a totally began diet or a modified vegetarian diet. What are the health benefits to vegetarian diets in general?
