!! ESSAY CONTEST !!

The University Institute of Popular Culture (IoPC) is sponsoring an essay contest, open to all students here at Mudville University.

We all know that popular culture appropriates "high culture" imagery to create its own meanings. For the contest, the IoPC has decided to focus specifically on the ways that one of the most famous paintings of all time - Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper - has been mimicked (or even parodied) within popular culture. Some of these mimicries have appropriated detailed meaning from the original, requiring the viewer to understand the original painting in great depth. Other mimicries have appealed only to a general sense of what da Vinci's The Last Supper is about. Contest entries may select either kind of mimicry. What we do require is that you examine a particular pop culture mimicry of The Last Supper in order to judge its effectiveness as a piece of art intended to communicate something to its viewer.

Your essay should be about 750 words. Include an image of the original The Last Supper as well as an image of your selected pop culture mimicry of it. Document your sources using "Chicago (R) style," Chicago style with references and citations.

Essays will be judged for their quality of research and persuasiveness by a faculty panel made up of Prof. Peter Stone (Director of IoPC), Father Ralph de Bricassart (Department ofReligionanPhilosophy), and Prof. Judy S. Cariot (Department of Art).

The prize is $500 in cash to the Mudville University student who submits the best essay. Deadline: June 22, 2017.
